Leila @ “I’ve heard it all before…”
during my senior year in high school, my dad sat me down and gave me the ultimatum for my life. he said i had two choices: go to college or get a job. if i chose the first, then i had to do what i needed to do to get scholarships for my education?because he wasn?t paying for it. either way?i wasn?t staying in the house. lol so, i chose the college and scholarship route.
while in school, i would go back home every three weeks or so to stock up on groceries and attend to a much need hair appointment. when i left the house to leave, my mom would say, ?okay now, be careful!? every time my dad would drop me off back at college his parting words were ?okay now,you know what to do?handle your business.? every. time. he still does.

In Wooden Nickels: CG leaves his freshman orientation sad and confused.
- College Survivors: What is the most memorable thing about freshman orientation?
- College Dreamers: What do you hope to get out of your freshman orientation?
JamTown’s Response:
Ooo orientation.? These memories are gonna be pretty spotty.? There were several different orientations during the summer that you could choose to go to.? And they were lasted for 2 days.? I can remember setting up my college email address.? That was cool.? I think I met with my adviser and signed up for classes.? I made the silly decision of taking an 8AM lab class.? (Yeah…nobody told me.)? I remember meeting a girl who talked about Paris…alot.? She even had a tattoo of the Eiffel Tower on her lower back I think.? I thought she was pretty interesting.? They had a “party” for us on the last day of orientation that was pretty lame.? It was at the coffee house/performance space on campus and there were about 7 people dancing.? Everyone else looked scared, awkward or uncomfortable.? I don’t believe I ended up hanging out with any of the people I met at orientation once I actually started at USC either.? During the first week of school, I bumped into a group of people that ended up being my core group of friends all four years.? Shout out to the people who lived at the Radisson!!? All in all, orientation left me with a curiosity, I guess, for what was to come.
So what’s your story?

My freshman orientation was interesting, to say the least. It was a three day shindig where we moved into the dorms the first day, followed by two days at a camping retreat out in the middle of nowhere in Texas. The very first day, after I had moved all of my things into my room, I went out to the lobby of the dorm and sat down next to a group of girls I had never met before…you know, trying to be friendly and what not. Anyway, out of nowhere, to my right side comes this cute, perky little Indian girl with braces and a pixie hair cut who plops down beside me with a huge smile saying “Hello!!”. I thought she was mad weird. Needless to say, her name was Priya, and she is currently still one of my best friends in the entire world! So we all piled onto a bus, and drove to some unidentified campsite somewhere outside of Houston, all the while singing various Jesus oriented tunes! Did I mention that it was a Baptist university? Yes, Houston Baptist Univ. to be precise. So, we arrived at the campsite, where over the next two days, we would be subjected to inspirational speeches such as “Carpe Diem” and being “Spiritually well rounded” and what not, and forced to engage in such activities as, passing around a spirit stick, learning the school song, and square dancing. It wasn’t all bad, mind you. We did have a lot of free time to ride paddle boats, slide down a giant water slide (yes, the camp had a waterslide!), and, overall, have a grand old time making new friends. Essentially, the entire orientation was pretty much to get us to drink the kool aid, and think that everything is cool, and that your future professors (who were there, btw) aren’t currently judging you because you have dyed red hair, rainbow nail polish, and immediately choose to hang out with the 1 Goth, the smokers, the 2 obviously gay guys, and other various “heathens” of the freshman class. Haha!…memories…

I have very few memories of college orientation. There was a lame dance the last day. I remembered they played “Come on ride that train.” There was one session where we were taught the school’s fight song and cheers. I soon forgot those. I became quick friends with a girl who seemed very nice and compatible. We ended up living in the same dorm so we initially hung out all the time. She showed her true colors the first month of school and we never spoke again.

During orientation all I could think about was “so this is going to be my competition for the next four years…”

Honestly I don’t know what freshman orientation will hold except for meeting my adviser and meeting new people. I have that same mindset that Ms.Leila had “so this is going to be my competition for the next four years.” Orientation, I just want to get to know a few people and get ready for college life.
