Summer Mishaps

Author: JamTown  //  Category: Summertime

Hi Friends,

I wanna give a shout out to Worthing High School (Career Center) in Houston, Texas. The teachers and students at this school have taken the college blog and vlog to a whole new level. Just this week, they held a Wooden Nickels premiere, complete with red carpet, strobe lights, and popcorn.

During the event, they watched several of the Wednesday Vlogs, followed by a series of activities. One was role play, where they would act out some of the scenarios mentioned in the vlogs. They also held discussions where they talked about those scenarios and how they would respond. Lastly, the students went on the website and posted their own comments. I even called in and said hi to the excited college-bound students and gave them more insight into the purpose of this blog.

The teachers at Worthing plan on having these Wooden Nickels events regularly in an attempt to get their students thinking about college in a different way. I am so excited that Worthing is being pro-active and creative and I would encourage other schools around the country to do the same.? It’s a great way for students to be in a group environment and to talk about college issues that are not written in any books.? Let me know how you would like to get involved.

And if you didn’t get a chance to check out the vlog this week, you can see it under “The Wednesday Vlog” category.

In Wooden Nickels: During one of CG’s college summers, he almost gets left behind at a vacation spot.

  • College Survivors: Did you have any mishaps during any of your college summers?

JamTown’s Response:

I can’t think of any? major summer mishaps.? I know that when I did go on a cruise with a friend my senior year, we made sure that we would not get left by the ship when we stopped in Mexico.? That would have been a travesty. ? So we were back on the ship with time to spare and ready to hit that all-you-can eat dining hall.

Now, I could talk about the summer mishaps of my friends, but that would take way too long.? :-)

So what’s your story?

Response of the Day is a funny one….

Joe @ “All-Nighters”

Oh? All-nighters?

I was pretty infamous for ridiculous all-nighters. My big problem being that I can?t really focus or do work unless it?s crunch time. It wasn?t until my last semester that I could do any kind of pre-writing/pre-work for papers, but even then – I?d do most of my work the night before it was due. Further, I couldn?t really get down to it until about 2am. I?d sit to start writing at 10pm and end up chatting on AIM, facebooking, youtubing, etc.etc.etc. until about 2am when most of my friends were asleep – no one to talk to on AIM, no one updating their facebook status, nice and quiet?

So, knowing that I couldn?t really work until 2am anyway. I realized one day that most bars/clubs close at 2am? So, I started combining business and pleasure. I would go out clubbing/drinking/partying until 2am, then get home and get to writing. I would finish papers in a quarter of the time, and still had a chance to have fun that night. And surprisingly, drunk or sober, tired from partying or tired from trying to get started, my grades didn?t waver? Straight Cs?

Just kidding, I wasn?t a C student. But seriously, my grades were the same after I started my ?party, then write? routine as before. Maybe even better, because I was still energized from being out and about.

New Question!

In Wooden Nickels: There is never a dull moment during CG’s college summers.

  • College Survivors: How did you spend/How do you spend your college summers?
  • College Dreamers: How do you hope to spend your college summers?

JamTown’s Response:

My first college summer, I spent at my parents house chillin and inadvertently working off that freshman 15 (clears throat…um 20) I gained. How did I do that? By dancing around my house…literally. Yeah, I was kind of bored that summer. The next two summers were spent in LA working at different internships. I was a production assistant on an independent film, an intern at a PR company (that kind of felt like a cover operation for something else…it was weird) and I continued my work-study job through the summer too. The rest of the time was spent hanging out with my friends from college who also stayed in LA for the summer. I halfway thought about studying abroad during the summer, but for some reason, that idea never got off the ground. I also wanted to do some traveling too, but I never did that either. I’m always dreaming about traveling to some exotic/historic place. Maybe if I did, I’d have some more interesting summer stories!
