College Vlog #30: Stranger Than Fiction

Author: JamTown  //  Category: Dorm Living, Jobs, The Wednesday Vlog

Hi Friends,

Today I’m interviewing another great musician, Neeki Bey.  His college story is somewhat of a shocker, so brace yourselves.

AND Christmas is soon approaching. Excitement!

Too Much Community For Me

Author: JamTown  //  Category: Dorm Living
  • College Survivors: Did you have to use community showers and bathrooms in college?

JamTown’s Response:

I didn’t have to do the whole community shower/community bathroom thing in college.  Thank you Jesus!!  That was one of the conditions for how I selected a place to live as a freshman.  I absolutely did not want to have share a bathroom with 50 other people.  I didn’t want have to wake up out of bed, leave my room, and walk down the hall, just to use the restroom or to even brush my teeth in the morning.  If I was gonna have to worry about bathroom cleanliness, I wanted to deal with only one other person, not an entire group of messy girls.

Thankfully, USC offered freshmen the option of staying in apartments and I jumped at the opportunity.  I was even able to have only one roommate for the first two years of college, which was so awesome.  I’m not saying that I couldn’t have handled it if I did have to use community showers/bathrooms in college, but I’m so glad that I didn’t have to.

The Fire Alarm

Author: JamTown  //  Category: Dorm Living
  • College Survivors: Was the fire alarm a constant invader of your peaceful dorm living experience?

JamTown’s Response:

The infamous fire alarm.  In some campus housing at USC, it rarely went off because of a real fire.  There was this one apartment complex that was a 5-minute walk from campus where the fire alarm would go off about once every other week.  Maybe even more than that.  Some silly (or intoxicated) person would always pull the alarm at all hours of the night, and as a result, had the residents standing out in the cold in their pajamas pretty regularly.  I never had to deal with that craziness because I lived elsewhere.  The alarm did go off where I lived, but it was way more rare and not as annoying.  I can’t even imagine getting pulled out of bed at 3am over some foolishness.  My advice to college dreamers: Don’t pull that fire alarm in jest.  Even if you’re curious.  You can get a hefty fine and it’s just plain RUDE!

FREE FOOD!!!

Author: JamTown  //  Category: Campus Life, Dorm Living

TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!  The best birthday gift for my birthday month would be to lock down an executive producer for this film.  We’ll see what happens.

Here’s a funny question.

  • College Survivors: Did your college have many opportunities for students to get free food?  Did you take advantage?

JamTown’s Response:

Oh my gosh.  If a student at USC was really focused and organized, he could get a free meal probably every day of the week.  There was always some organization or department having a meeting and/or function that was open to the student body and serving food, as well.  Most of these groups had food at their events because they knew it would attract a crowd.  And it definitely did.  Residential Advisors at the dorms and apartments across campus would have free food events for their residents, as well.  I knew a few people who would bounce around from meeting to meeting about things they had no interest in just to get a free lunch or dinner.  Sometimes it can be that crucial, especially when you have to deal with the expenses of attending a private university.

And you too, College Dreamers, can take advantage of this great opportunity for free nourishment.  Here’s what you need to do.  Keep your eyes open as you walk the campus and peruse any flyers posted.  Most organizations will include that they’re serving food on their flyers.  If your college has a newspaper, check it for postings about meetings and school events that are also serving food.  Lastly, keep your ear to the street as you go throughout the day.  You’ll probably hear fellow students or dorm mates talking about the free meal they are going to get for the day.  Keep listening for details or do independent research to find out more info.

I did a combination of meal plan + free food plan when I was in school and it worked out very well for me and my budget.  Now my College Dreamers have the tools to do the same.

Moving Out

Author: JamTown  //  Category: Dorm Living

It’s graduation time, which means it’s also packing time.

College Survivors: How efficient and fast were you in packing up your apartment in college?? Did you have help?? Did you start early?? Have you ever used a storage company during the summer?

JamTown’s Response:

Oh I hated packing up my apartment each summer.? And packing up before & after graduation was so annoying because I was so much busier with all the festivities.? The only good part was that my family was there to help me.? I had done a decent amount of packing before they came to LA, but I was nowhere near finished.? They weren’t too excited about helping me either, but I had a good excuse.? :-)

In the previous years, I had no choice but to pack on my own.? Starting early?? Depended on my finals schedule.? I always started packing my clothes first.? Those were the easiest to let go of.? I felt like I still needed access to everything else.? In addition, I used storage every summer.? So my sister or some of my friends would help me move my life out of USC housing.? But all the lifting, cleaning, and moving would have me leaving some of the packing to the last-minute.? I always found some excuse that convinced me that I had more time.? Some of my friends were so bad that they would leave massive amounts of “stuff” behind: dishes, food, and even clothing.? They claimed to be giving it to the cleaning personnel.? I called it super lazy and kind of smart.

In Wooden Nickels: CG has to live with two people his freshman year.

  • College Survivors: How many roommates did you live with at a time and would you have rather lived alone?
  • College Dreamers: How many roommates would you want in college?

JamTown’s Response:

Going in to college, I wanted to have a least one roommate in college. It would have been too boring to live alone. My first two years of college, I got my wish. I had one roommate each year. I was very happy with that number because I didn’t want to live with too many personalities right off the bat. I wanted to settle into college life without having to worry about a bunch of crazies I had to come home to. The last two years of school, I had three roommates. That caused for a lot more action, adventure, and arguments, but it wasn’t the end of the world. I liked the girls I lived with and I learned how to deal with their personalities and habits just like I’m sure they had to get adjusted to mine.

The RA

I really enjoyed the blog. I can totally relate to how people are in college.

In Wooden Nickels: CG’s RA surprises him with some unexpected news.

  • College Survivors: Did you have any residential advisers (RA) in college?? What was your opinion of him/her?

JamTown’s Response:

For some reason, I can only remember my freshman year RA.? Maybe because that was the time I needed the most assistance.? As I said in a previous post, I lived in co-ed housing.? My RA was a male upperclassman who was in the film school also.? He was more of a graphics/techie type and knew all about special effects.? I remember hanging out with him alot in the dorm with another good friend of mine.? Despite his busy schedule, he was always extremely helpful and was very easygoing.? He wasn’t a tyrant like alot of other freshman RAs I had heard about.? And I’m sure everyone on our floor appreciated that the most.

The Girl/Guy Next Door

Happy Monday!? Response of the Day comes from Lola @ “Get to Work!” (Campus Life” category)

I truly had one of the best college jobs ever. My college had an early childhood music program consisting of babies, toddlers, and their parents. On Saturday mornings, I assisted in these classes. We would lead them in songs, nursery rhymes, and silly dances. After two semesters, I assisted in the classes on campus and had two classes of my own at two different daycare centers. It was the easiest and (most entertaining) money I?ve ever made.

In Wooden Nickels: CG lives in an all-male dormitory.

  • College Survivors: Did you live in a co-ed dorm or a single-sex one?
  • College Dreamers: Do you plan on living in a co-ed dorm or a single-sex one?

JamTown’s Response:

I lived in an on-campus co-ed apartment building.? So co-ed, that I lived across the hall from two guys.? I thought that may have sent my parents reeling, but I can’t remember a reaction from them.? Or maybe I never told them.? Anyway, they were nice guys.? My RA (residential adviser) was actually a male.? And while my apartment building was co-ed, all the actual apartments were single-sex.? I enjoyed the co-ed status.? It made things way more interesting, especially in my first year of college.

I am currently finishing my senior year and everyone is overwhelming me with advice about the college experience. The main topic of discussion that rolls off the tongue of my peers is the college parties. I throw a couple of those mp3, laptop kind of gigs on the regular. And my family has functions at the house ALL THE TIME! However, when it comes to my upcoming college experience, I plan to enjoy myself.

In Wooden Nickels: Keeping a dorm room clean is a challenge.

  • College Survivors: Were you a stickler for cleanliness in college?? Did you have to deal with messy roommates?
  • College Dreamers: Will you be able to keep your living space clean in college?

JamTown’s Response:

I kept my apartments clean for the most part in college.? It never got extremely messy.? There were the normal books stacked on the kitchen table, which one roommate would eventually move to my desk.? Or clothes piled up when I would get busy.? Or dealing with kitchen duty.? But the different people I lived with all four? years were generally clean people.? I never had to deal with horrendous cleaning habits…thank goodness!

However, I did hear about (and witness) alot of girls from wealthy families whose rooms were just ridiculously filthy.? Now the excuse for alot of these girls was that when they were growing up, they were used to having a maid clean their rooms.? So they couldn’t possibly know how to clean their rooms on their own.? I was completely floored.? What do you say to that?? You can’t say much.? I’ll tell you that.
