The Alumni Network

Author: JamTown  //  Category: Jobs

Still in the spirit of graduations and all, we’re gonna talk about networking today.

College Survivors: Does your school have a strong alumni network?? Have you used it?? Has it worked for you?

JamTown’s Reponse:

At USC, they talk about this thing called the Trojan Family.? It is our alumni network and apparently, the Trojan Family is supposed to be one of the most close-knit and connected ones of them all.? Well, I can say that the Trojan family is definitely a strong one, whether you’re living in Los Angeles or around the world.? Being an alum from the film school especially, makes the eyebrows raise and gives you a little more edge, makes possible employers a little more comfortable, and helps get you past a long line of other people.? It has helped me in more ways than one and I am actively engaged in daily communication with USC alums for support, information, and networking purposes.

However, some people make the mistake of believing that their college alumni network is going to work some kind of magic on its own.? They believe that having a school’s name on their resume equals instant success, an instant foot in the door.? Maybe for some employers, but what you really have to do is use your alumni network to enhance those qualities and skills that you already possess.? Because once you get the job, you still have to deliver.

I’m proud to be a part of the Trojan family and I try my best to not only seek it out for personal opportunities, but also to use my connections and knowledge to? fellow Trojans any way I can.

The Resume

Author: JamTown  //  Category: Jobs

I hope you watched the vlog yesterday.? Check it out if you haven’t and if you’re on Twitter, follow me!? (@wooden_nickels)

Here’s your question for today!

  • College Survivors: What was? your resume experience like?? Easy?? Frustrating?? Confusing?
  • College Dreamers: Do you have a resume yet?? Do you know how to format one?

JamTown’s Response:

Oh the resume. There are so many “resume experts” out there. Everyone has an opinion about the page number, the font type, the font size, the paper stock, the number of pages, and the list goes on.? Everyone says their way is “standard,” but it’s all relative (for the most part).? There was a great resource at the USC Career Center where students could get one-on-one resume consultation.? I can’t remember if I ever scheduled one, but I know many people who did and said it worked for them.

I do remember revising my resume over and over again throughout college.? After? a lot of headache and talking with various people, I began to settle on a format that I felt was comprehensive and highlighted the best of my jobs, academics, and skills.?? I also began to realize that I needed to take my resume format on a case by case basis and that I probably needed more than one resume.? I had a film-centered one and more general and broad one.? This allowed me to have a resume ready for any occasion, saving me the time of rewriting it with each job submission.

One thing is certain though.? Resumes have been around a long time and have not gone out of style.? Whether you’re representing yourself on paper or on video (a reel), the resume is here to stay.

In Wooden Nickels: CG is informed about his first post-graduate job at graduation.

  • College Survivors: What was your first job post-college?

JamTown’s Response:

My very first job was as a transcriber for an ACLU documentary series called “The Freedom Files.”? It was pretty cool because I was able to work from home and email in my transcriptions.? I was so happy to be working because I had been looking for a job for months and had succumbed to the title of “the couch potato”.? It was me, my snacks, & the TV with a stack of resumes on the side.? But as a transcriber, I was able to get a good government lesson as well as? a paycheck.? A double whammy.? Yesssss.

whoa! your friend is fine! anyway, my freshman year i didn’t have a roommate, but my sophomore year I had a roommate that had funky underarms and didn’t wash her sheets on her bed all semester, she only febreezed them, thank goodness she move out when the semester finished. My junior year, my roommate was nice, but three times I walked in on her and her boyfriend having sex, and one time i woke up in the middle of the night and they were they have sex right there. That’s when I got an apartment.

I did have one good roommate, she was awesome. I am a quiet person and so was she, so we got along great!!!!!!!!

  • College Survivors: What kind of college job did you have?
  • College Dreamers: What kind of job would you want to have in college?

JamTown’s Response:

I had one of the best jobs on campus (if not THE best job).? I spoke briefly about my job in the “Shhh…” post.? Like I mentioned there, I worked in the technology department located in one of the major campus libraries.? Each of the work-study students had a computer and we spent most of our time doing homework & surfing the net.? Facebook and YouTube were just growing in popularity and we would frequent those sites.? AOL Instant Messenger was also a favorite.

Most of our job responsibilities consisted of running errands.? We would pick up checks around campus, drop off check requests, and other errands I can’t even remember.? Since I had a bike, I was able to zip around campus with ease so I could get back to surfing the internet.? We were paid well and it was low stress environment, which was a rare combination for alot of campus jobs.

Internships

Author: JamTown  //  Category: Jobs

Happy Tuesday!? In lieu of a Response of the Day, I am watching the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States – Barack Obama.? Here’s today’s question.

In Wooden Nickels:
CG has the internship of a lifetime.

  • College Survivors: What was your best internship?? Or what was your worst?
  • College Dreamers: What kind of internship(s) do you want in college?

JamTown’s Response:

My best internship was at ABC Studios where I interned for the television show, “Threat Matrix.”? I worked in the the Writer’s Office, which housed the show’s team of writers and the producers.? One of the coolest aspects of the job was that it was located on the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, California.? I got my official ID badge that I had to show at the gate entrance and I was able to walk freely around the lot and eat lunch at the commissary (cafeteria).? (I also remember randomly running into Raven Symone…haha).? It was a great internship because the Writer’s Office was small and I was able to observe alot of the goings-on of a new network television show.? The writers, producers, and their assistants were so warm and helpful to me.? I didn’t get that “Hollywoodish” vibe at all.

I became an intern the summer before the show started airing on ABC.? The show was about homeland security and I assisted the producers in research for the episodes.? I also did coverage for the books in the show’s small library and answered phones for the office.? I learned about the world of television writers….That it is not just one writer who is responsible for our favorite TV shows, but a team of 8-10 talented writers who work tirelessly to create the words that you hear.? One of the major things I learned is that television is a writer’s medium, while film is a director’s medium.? In essence, I’m talking about the hierarchy of power.? In television, writers and producers get all the glory and in film, directors get all the glory.? In addition, I learned that television producers also write episodes, while most film producers are not writers.? These are among the many things I learned that summer and it opened my eyes to all the opportunities that the television industry can bring.
